Annual Campaign 2022

Letter from NBR President Roy Kamphausen

In 2022 the National Bureau of Asian Research went global. The reach of our impact grew from our longstanding stakeholders in DC and the capitals of northeast Asia to include key partners in Europe (Paris, London, Brussels, Berlin) and the continent of Africa.

Much of that reflects the global effects of China’s increases in power and influence. U.S. policy responses similarly think of China in global ways, with the State Department’s new “China House” set up to coordinate policy responses across geographies and functionalities just the latest development. Of note, early in the new Congress NBR will convene a series of briefings for the Senate Foreign Relations staff at their request to examine the global and cross-domain effects of China’s policies and actions.

At a time when the stakes for getting Asia policy right have never been greater, please consider making a year-end-gift to NBR. Your gift supports NBR’s vital research and ongoing investment in our future by training the next generation of Asia specialists.

Support NBR today

NBR’s innovative research makes a difference in so many areas that are of pressing concern for policymakers in Congress and the Administration—ranging from China’s expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific, strategy for Africa, and digital strategy to the challenges of achieving both energy security and environmental sustainability. The impact of U.S.-China competition, pushback against globalization, and the Covid-19 pandemic on the Indo-Pacific region were assessed in our 20th anniversary volume of Strategic Asia. Our work on China’s military challenge further underscores the need for the United States to cooperate with its allies to counterbalance China’s unwelcome advances.

Your support for cutting-edge research has a tangible policy impact!

An important part of our mission is to train the next generation of Asia specialists through programs such as the Undergraduate Diversity Fellowship, Chinese Language Fellowship, and Ellings-Korduba Research Fellowship.

Your support for training the next generation will pay dividends for a lifetime!

Make an online gift or return a pledge form today—and make a difference for tomorrow!
