This article examines the ongoing modernization and reform of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in four central areas: security policy, defense doctrine, internal organization, and force structure and aquisitions. It then assesses the implications of developments in these areas for Chinese external military policy and behavior over the near, medium and long erm, particularly regarding Northeast Asia.
