In the January 7 Bangladesh election, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party—the Awami League—won a fourth consecutive term in office. For perspectives on the election and its implications, we offer two commentaries from noted experts on Bangladesh.

Tariq Karim examines the outcome of the election and the implications for the country’s foreign relations. Ambassador Karim is the director of the Centre for Bay of Bengal Studies at the Independent University in Bangladesh and a member of the Board of Advisors at the National Bureau of Asian Research.

Ali Riaz addresses questions about the fairness of the process and considers what is next for Bangladeshi politics. Dr. Riaz is a distinguished professor in the Department of Politics and Government at Illinois State University and president of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies.
