Japan’s relations with the world have been undergoing rapid and fundamental change over the past decade. Although Japan has been recognized as an advanced industrial nation since the 1970s, only in the past few years has it become a major international creditor. With this sudden shift, Japan has begun to exercise a more forceful role in the world affairs, especially in East Asia. The future will bring a stronger and more explicit Japanese economic and political role in the region.
