To analyze the issues the People’s Republic of China will put on America’s foreign policy agenda at the turn of the century first requires understanding the significant developments that will characterize the P.R.C. in the 1990s. The initial part of this paper, therefore, addresses the 1990s in China. The paper’s second section examines the implications of China’s situation in the year 2000 for America’s interests.

The initial part of this paper, therefore, addresses the 1990s in China. The paper’s second section examines the implications of China’s situation in the year 2000 for America’s interests. It concludes that by the year 2000, China’s difficulties in solving its key domestic issues will become matters of increased importance to American interests and to the interests of other countries in the region. The third section provides a brief overview of pertinent global trends of the 1990s and their potential impact. The concluding section points ou the policy implications of the entire array of these developments for the United States.
