Central Asia in the 21st Century


This 2003–4 initiative comprising a series of studies launched a comprehensive assessment of political, economic, and educational developments in contemporary Central Asia and Azerbaijan. The initiative explored the emerging political cultures of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, providing insight into the influence of evolving political sub-structures on regime stability in these countries; investigated the state of transportation, telecommunications, water, and energy infrastructure in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan; and assessed the state of public and private secular and religious educational infrastructure in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
