David Pietz


David Pietz is an Associate Professor of Chinese History and Director of the Asia Program at Washington State University. He has authored and edited many works, including Engineering the State: the Huai River and Reconstruction in Nationalist China (2002) and State and Economy in Republican China: A Handbook for Scholars (2001). His current project, Engineering Scarcity: The Yellow River and the Historical Roots of China’s Water Crisis, is under contract with Harvard University Press. Dr. Pietz’s work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Mellon Foundation
