U.S.-Taiwan Trade and Technology Relations

Intensifying geopolitical complications and supply chain challenges have led countries around the world to reevaluate their strategic approaches to trade, technology, and supply chains, often resulting in increased emphasis on resilience and national security. While policymakers continue to seek new solutions, the United States and Taiwan recently signed the first agreement under the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, which seeks to facilitate bilateral trade and investment flows and strengthen U.S.-Taiwan cooperation across a wide range of related areas.

Amid these developments, the National Bureau of Asian Research hosted an in-person event in Seattle on August 14, 2023, to examine U.S.-Taiwan trade and technology relations and opportunities for increased collaboration. The event featured remarks from Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua, Lieutenant Governor of Washington Denny Heck, and Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle Daniel K.C. Chen. Over 100 members of the policy, academic, and business communities from the United States, Taiwan, and likeminded Indo-Pacific partners attended the event, which featured a robust discussion on cooperation in the semiconductor industry, deepening bilateral trade ties, and facilitating U.S.-Taiwan investment ties.
