The Evolution of AI Governance and Regulation in the Indo-Pacific
Amid rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and diverging approaches to AI governance globally, NBR’s Evolution of AI Governance and Regulation in the Indo-Pacific project explores key issues shaping the development of AI policy across the region. Heightened geoeconomic competition to advance national AI capabilities has fueled a trend toward lighter-touch regulation, exemplified by recent policy shifts in the United States and Japan. Simultaneously, countries are seeking to balance AI innovation with responsible governance and risk mitigation measures through national regulations and engagement in international frameworks.
This initiative will bring together policymaker and private sector perspectives to analyze and compare approaches to AI governance and regulation in countries including Japan, Singapore, China, India, and South Korea, and examine key topics and emerging trends in AI governance such as the development of AI standards and norms, AI safety and ethics, and the role of multilateral organizations. The project will include a series of briefs exploring regional countries’ approaches and other issues within Indo-Pacific AI governance and regulation, in addition to expert discussions on NBR’s Asia Insight podcast.
