China: The New Cold War

On August 3, 2019, NBR, the Movement for the Renaissance of Vietnam, and the Institute of World Politics co-hosted the event China in the World: 21st Century Challenges on the topic “China: The New Cold War” with John Sano, former Deputy Director, National Clandestine Service, Central Intelligence Agency.

About the Lecture

The focus of the lecture was on Chinese strategies—both regionally and globally—to increase Chinese influence, supplant U.S. interests, and establish China as the dominant actor on the world stage in the future.

About the Speaker

John Sano spent 28 years in the Central Intelligence Agency and was appointed Deputy Director of the National Clandestine Service (formerly the Directorate of Operations) in November 2005.

As Deputy Director, Mr. Sano chaired the Senior Leadership Team and oversaw the day-to-day management of the National Clandestine Service. In addition, he was an active member of the CIA’s Executive Management Team and regularly briefed senior administration and congressional committee members on matters of national security and worldwide covert operations.

His previous positions within the CIA included serving as a Chief of Station in one domestic and two foreign locations, as well as nearly 15 years of overseas experience in Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Mr. Sano also serves on the Board of Directors of Garda Federal Services and is a professor of intelligence at the Institute of World Politics as well as a lecturer on national security and intelligence issues at Johns Hopkins University and at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.
