Examining Indo-Pacific Approaches to Digital Regulatory and Competition Policy

Recognizing the importance of the Indo-Pacific in global digital ecosystems, NBR’s Examining Indo-Pacific Approaches to Digital Regulatory and Competition Policy initiative compares and analyzes approaches to digital regulation and competition policy. Ongoing efforts to develop new legal, regulatory, and enforcement approaches in the region are being shaped by established, geopolitically influential models such as those emanating from the United States, the European Union, and China. This initiative assesses how these competing approaches might affect the policymaking processes and innovational, economic, and security outcomes for countries in the region considering similar measures.

The multistage initiative will investigate the factors influencing countries to adopt different approaches to digital regulation and competition policy, the potential risks of these approaches for innovation and economic outcomes, and policy options to address these risks and promote effective digital regulation. The initial project examines South Korea’s digital regulatory regime and enforcement activities undertaken by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and evaluates the implications of these actions for the business environment, innovation, and South Korea’s international trade obligations. The project will culminate in the publication of an NBR Special Report, as well as engagements with government officials and other key stakeholders across the Indo-Pacific.
