Historical Purposes and Guiding Principles of American Foreign Policy

On May 27, 2010, the Slade Gorton International Policy Center at NBR hosted a roundtable discussion led by Philip Zelikow, former Senator Slade Gorton, and NBR President Rich Ellings, to discuss the historical purposes and guiding principles of American foreign policy.

Professor Zelikow has held major positions in both academe and government, and is an award-winning author. Professor Zelikow is currently Professor of History at the University of Virginia. Previously, he was the Director of the Miller Center of Public Affairs, Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission, and Counsel at the U.S. State Department, a deputy to Secretary Rice.

Attending the discussion were scholars and students from the University of Washington, Congressional staff members, non-profit executives, and civic and business leaders from Washington and the Pacific Northwest.

The afternoon roundtable discussion preceded the Seattle First Citizen Award banquet, hosted by the King Country Realtors Association, which honored Senator Gorton as this year’s First Citizen. Dr. Zelikow was one of the tributors at the event.
