Research, Growth, and Mentorship

Following orientation in June, the fellows will begin a three-month (June to August) fellowship conducting original, independent research related to Japan studies, U.S.-Japan relations, and/or Japanese foreign policy. The fellows nominate a research topic of interest, refine the scope with input from experts and NBR mentors, and conduct interviews and desk study, culminating in a research paper. The fellows during the fellowship period will receive periodic feedback on their research, take part in relevant NBR events, and participate in professional development workshops at NBR, in addition to regular check-in meetings with experts and NBR editors to answer any questions that arise. Fellows receive a stipend intended to cover living and travel costs during the fellowship period.

Summer Seminar

The fellows will participate in an intensive Summer Seminar featuring lectures by experts in the policy and international relations field. As part of the Summer Seminar, the fellows will conduct site visits and attend external meetings to learn more about the multiple dimensions of U.S. foreign policy in Asia. During the summer program, the fellows will present their research findings to NBR staff and select guests from the policy, academic, and business communities.
