Clean EDGE Asia Conference

Opportunities for Innovation: Ensuring Equitable Energy Development in the Indo-Pacific

On February 15, 2022, NBR, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources, hosted a public, virtual conference, “Opportunities for Innovation: Ensuring Equitable Energy Development in the Indo-Pacific,” as part of NBR’s project on the Clean EDGE Asia initiative.

With the conclusion of COP26 in November 2021, the United States and its partners in Asia seek to drastically reduce their emissions and strive for lower carbon societies. Wind and solar have dominated the conversation as technologies of choice, however even with advances in battery storage, these sources alone will struggle to meet the goals of fully net-zero carbon economies by midcentury. At the same time, private sector actors who were not satisfied with the outcomes of COP26 have pledged to ratchet up climate funding to help society achieve its climate goals. These investments will be expected to address environmental justice issues and ensure equitable development for all.

As countries around the world work to ensure equitable energy development, policy planners are looking for innovative ideas that can deliver a just transition. Countries striving to address the climate crisis will need comprehensive social, economic, and energy development policies to ensure a thriving livelihood for their citizens. How can more developed countries share the economic and social burden of a green transition? What existing or innovative policy approaches can be utilized to mitigate these challenges? What actionable items are developing countries looking for from public and private sector partners?
