Summary

Congressmen Rick Larsen and Mark Kirk, co-chairs of the U.S.-China Working Group, opened the event with an update on the U.S.-China relationship. Edward Gresser (Director, Trade and Global Markets Project, Progressive Policy Institute) and Daniel Twining (Senior Fellow for Asia, The German Marshall Fund of the United States) led a panel discussion and elaborated on findings in their February 2009 publication Shock of the New: Congress and Asia in 2009. Respondents from the U.S. House of Representatives and from the U.S. Senate included Angela Ellard, Chief Trade Counsel (Republican), House Committee on Ways & Means; Frank Jannuzi, Senior East Asia Adviser (Majority), Senate Committee on Foreign Relations; and J.J. Ong, Staff Member (Majority), House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg concluded with remarks on U.S. strategies for success in Asia. Steinberg used a quote from Kenneth Pyle’s essay “Reading the New Era in Asia” to set the theme for his talk, noting that Pyle’s diagnosis “really represents the challenges that we all face in advising an effective strategy going forward.”
