U.S.-Asia Economic and Trade Relations

In November of 2022, The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) held its inaugural Pacific Rim Congressional Study Group Dinner for senior congressional staff. One scholar from NBR’s network and one former policy practitioner discussed the changing global and regional economic and trade landscape.

Experts and congressional staff exchanged ideas and perspectives on challenges posed by China to U.S. technological competitiveness and economic security; the risks and costs of U.S.-China economic decoupling, recent Biden administration measures against China’s high-tech industries, including the CHIPS Act and sweeping export restrictions targeting Chinese semiconductor manufacturing; U.S. multilateral trade policy towards the Asia-Pacific; and opportunities for the U.S. Congress to counter the Chinese government’s predatorial economic strategy while managing bilateral tensions and global economic stability.
