China Energy and Environment Conference

NBR and the UK-based Ditchley Foundation hosted distinguished participants from North America, China, and Europe for a conference on November 13–15, 2008, in Seattle, Washington, on energy and environmental issues in China. Conference participants represented a broad spectrum of views from academia, business, government, and the policy research community.

The conference focused on three primary topics:

  • China’s internal development,
  • the environment and climate change, and
  • energy supply and demand.

Participants agreed that China’s potential to develop a low-carbon economic model is contingent upon internal governance issues and China’s handling of its imminent demographic changes. Externally, trust and international cooperation were deemed to be essential ingredients for transitioning to a green economy.
