Over the course of 2022, NBR worked with numerous partners across the Indo-Pacific to identify areas to strengthen existing cooperation or build new partnerships to achieve goals for energy and climate security. Issues ranged from technology cooperation through nuclear power and electric vehicle development, to just transitions and analyzing decarbonization strategies. The geopolitics of critical minerals and supply chains were an additional research focus, highlighting the partnerships and tensions across the Indo-Pacific.
Alongside these programs, countries across the Indo-Pacific are experiencing the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent supply chain disruption and energy crunch. With many nations aiming for mid-century net-zero emissions targets, massive amounts of capital and cooperation will be necessary to achieve these goals.
This event will examine perspectives from the United States and across Asia on key developments and milestones that took place this past year and highlight priority areas for partnerships in 2023. The panel discussion will cover issues such as increasing demand for critical mineral supplies, decoupling from international energy markets, and reexamining strategies for diversifying energy mixes. The event will also mark the launch of NBR’s eighteenth annual Energy Security Program report “Critical Minerals: Global Supply Chains and Indo-Pacific Geopolitics.”
