South Korean Elections and the Future of U.S.–Korean Peninsula Relations
On March 24, 2017, NBR hosted a staff briefing on Change and Continuity: South Korean Elections and the Future of U.S.–Korean Peninsula Relations at Rayburn House Office Building.
On March 10, South Korea’s Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, putting an official end to the Park administration after months of scandal, uncertainty, and political paralysis. South Korea’s parties are gearing up for a presidential election on May 9, amid increasing tensions throughout the region. This briefing will provide staffers with a preview of the upcoming election for Park’s successor, and outline key factors and interests that could shape the U.S.-South Korean relationship in the areas of security, geopolitics, and human rights during this period of leadership transition in both countries.
