Book Discussion: Assessing the People's Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era


The book discussion for the volume Assessing the People’s Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era featured a keynote address by Congressman Rick Larsen, co-chair of the bipartisan U.S.-China Working Group (USCWG) and member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Assessing the People’s Liberation Army in the Hu Jintao Era is produced by The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), the Strategic Studies Institute of (SSI) of the U.S. Army War College, and United States Pacific Command (USPACOM). This important new volume examines the developments in China’s national security and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) during the Hu Jintao administration from 2002 to 2012, including the promulgation of the New Historic Missions for the PLA and Hu’s complete handover of power to his successor, Xi Jinping.

The event featured a panel discussion in which chapter authors examined the milestones in PLA modernization over the last decade and the implications of these advancements.
