Poverty and National Security

On June 16, 2014, the Slade Gorton International Policy Center hosted a roundtable discussion on global poverty and how it should be a national security consideration for defense policymakers, with General Peter Chiarelli, former Vice Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army. The roundtable was moderated by former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton. This program was planned and developed by the students of the Gorton Center Global Leaders Program.

Speaker Bio

General Chiarelli retired as a four-star general with 40 years of experience designing and implementing American defense policy for the U.S. Army and Department of Defense in peace and during combat operations. As the 32nd Vice Chief of Staff in the Army, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Army and its 1.1 million active and reserve soldiers. As commander of the Multi-National Corps–Iraq, Chiarelli coordinated the actions of all four military services and was responsible for the day-to-day combat operations of more than 147,000 U.S. and Coalition troops. General Chiarelli now serves as CEO of One Mind, a nonprofit organization that takes a leading role in the research, funding, marketing, and public awareness of mental illness and brain injury. They are dedicated to benefiting all affected by brain illness and injury through fostering fundamental changes that will radically accelerate the development and implementation of improved diagnostics, treatments, and cures.
