Mercy Kuo
Mercy Kuo is a Senior Project Director, and Director, Strategic Asia Program at NBR.

As a Senior Project Director, Dr. Kuo creates and pursues business opportunities for NBR, determines significant/emerging issues in the field, manages project teams, and is responsible for the success of research projects.

Dr. Kuo joined The National Bureau of Asian Research in 2006 as Director, Southeast Asia Studies Program. From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Kuo served with the Central Intelligence Agency, Directorate of Intelligence, as an analyst on Northeast and Southeast Asian affairs. Her research specialty and interests include modern Chinese history, Chinese foreign policy, political Islam in Asia, and scenario-planning. She received her Ph.D. in Modern History from Oxford University (St. Antony’s College), M.A. in Chinese Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Center for Chinese Studies, and B.A. in Asian Studies from Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) and Polish, she authored Contending with Contradictions: China’s Policy toward Soviet Eastern Europe and the Origins of the Sino-Soviet Split, 1953-1960 (Lexington Books, 2001), the first work of its kind based on original Chinese and Polish archival sources.
