Admiral Thomas Fargo Named as New Shali Chair
NBR is pleased to announce the second holder of the John M. Shalikashvili Chair in National Security Studies (The Shali Chair), Admiral Thomas B. Fargo, USN (retired).
A 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Admiral Fargo comes to NBR after a distinguished thirty-five year career in the U.S. Navy, which culminated in his position as Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) from May 2002 to February 2005. Admiral Fargo was the senior U.S. military commander in Asia responsible for joint operations of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force across PACOM’s 100 million mile area of responsibility.
“We are thrilled to have a person of Tom’s integrity and wisdom drive the important work of the Shali Chair,” said Rich Ellings, President of NBR.
From September 29 through October 1, 2010, NBR hosted a series of launch events in Washington, D.C., and Seattle to welcome Admiral Fargo. Admiral Fargo met with both General Shalikashvili and Admiral Dennis Blair, the inaugural holder of the Shali Chair, among other individuals.
At NBR, Admiral Fargo will draw on his extensive experience in the Asia-Pacific region to inform policy debates on critical U.S. interests in Asia through activities such as briefings to congressional, military, administration, and intelligence representatives; meetings with senior-level counterparts in Asia; research and writing; and provision of remarks at public and private workshops and conferences.
