From APEC to Xanadu: Creating a Viable Community in the Post-Cold War Pacific

Donald C. Hellmann and Kenneth B. Pyle

The newest edition in NBR/M.E. Sharpe’s series on Asia-Pacific affairs, From APEC to Xanadu, analyzes concerns that must be addressed if APEC is to be a viable component of the post-Cold War international order. In the introduction, editors Donald Hellmann and Kenneth Pyle argue that the preservation of the Asian economic "miracle" will require new international arrangements to facilitate the creation of a community in the Pacific and to provide a framework within which the nations of the region can be integrated into the modern global system. In the essays that follow, leading scholars and officials from throughout the Asia Pacific address the international leadership and institutions needed to promote the economic cooperation, regional security, and the integration of this complex and challenging region into the international system.
